Why the RDL Is Often Preferred for Hypertrophy

  1. Continuous tension. No floor contact means no momentary unloading between reps. Time under tension per set is higher than either the conventional or stiff-legged deadlift.
  2. Eccentric emphasis. The lift is initiated from the top, so the lifter controls a deliberate eccentric before reversing. Eccentric loading is a powerful driver of muscle damage and subsequent hypertrophy.
  3. Self-limiting ROM. Stopping at maximal hamstring stretch rather than at the floor reduces lower-back injury risk while still training the hamstrings at their longest (most hypertrophic) length.
  4. Moderate spinal erector cost. Compared to the stiff-legged deadlift, the RDL's slightly shorter moment arm means the lower back fatigues less quickly, allowing more volume before systemic fatigue limits the session.
