Hypertrophy Day 1 — exercise 6 of 7
Triceps — long head stretch, 10:1 lever ratio
Body part: Triceps · Muscle group: Triceps · Equipment: grip barbell, flat bench
Top-scoring triceps exercise. The incline position puts the shoulder into flexion, which stretches the triceps long head (the largest of the three heads) under load at the bottom of every rep. The triceps force diagram shows the critical insight: the olecranon process (the bony tip of the elbow where the triceps inserts) is only 2–3 cm from the elbow joint axis, while the hand holding the bar is 25–30 cm away — a 10:1 mechanical disadvantage.
Exercise order reasoning: triceps are placed last on push day because they are synergists in the pressing movements (exercises 1–3). By the time you reach this exercise, the triceps have already been partially fatigued by pressing, so less external load is needed to achieve failure — and less load means less joint stress while still maximizing muscle tension.
